Appearance: He’s marked with a rugged, almost cow-boyish physicality, Cid Highwind; his skin has been coppered from spending full days out underneath the sun’s rays, fixing up airships and doing general mechanical repairs. It’s obvious that all this strenuous work has been physically rewarding, for Cid has quite a strapping build. His hay-colored hair seemingly swoops up and out of his face by its own accord, choppy and tufted and generally unkempt. Consequently, the pilot’s goggles on his head serve two main purposes: so that he always has a pair (as he’s a pilot by trade), and to keep that goddamn hair out of his face. Cid’s eyes are a blue, and although heavily flecked with grey they twinkle youthfully upon an otherwise hardened, sharply angled face. Overall, his face is somewhat birdlike, with a long nose and small, wry lips that eternally seem to balance a cigarette between them. Oh, and he’s always sporting a patch of stubble. Always. Clean shaven is much too pansy for the Captain of the infamous airship Highwind, and a full beard is too… old-looking. As for clothes: nothing beats a pair of hide gloves, tattered yet still irresistibly comfy boots, an old t-shirt ready to be splattered in oil(and hopefully, blood) and any old set of slacks.

Personality: Cid’s personality is as strikingly hard-hitting as his roughly hewn appearance. Perhaps it’s derived from his child hood, or more presently an effect of working with such complex machinery, but for whatever case, Cid cannot handle his anger. It has come to the point where it cannot be defined as “anger” anymore. It’s wrath. The simplest of things will set him off, and usually, it’s a collection of small things, rather than big things, that get under his calloused skin. Just ask his fiancée, Shera (I’m betting she has some ugly marks, to prove it, too). Having all this intense anger really ebbs out into his other characteristics, as over the years he has become more rude, crude, and generally pompous. Of course, Cid Highwind is a force to be reckoned with, but it’s his bloated ego that mars what could be an excellent reputation-if only he knew the definition of “modesty.”
I mean, how many people do YOU know that would prance up into the face of a malignant half-deity about to destroy the entire world with a falling meteor and shout at him, “COME AND GET ME, YEH GODDAMNED SHITHEAD!#$@#!”
Observers would presume that all his high aptitude for crankiness comes from the dawning of middle-age. But say that to his face, and you’re bound to be pulverized. In actuality, there’s an adventurous, reckless spark of youth that perks his cantankerous spirit, and though he has no problem blowing up at others, there’s something within him that simply wishes to be playful and fun.

Abilities/Strengths: Aside from being an excellent pilot on both air and sea (which is always an advantage in itself, really), Cid can also be classified as a dragoon, or lancer. This means he is aptly proficient with a spear, and can jump to staggering heights in order to plunge the weapon through grounded enemies. Like most fighters from the world of Gaia, Cid can also wield materia, natural substance refined into tiny spheres that, when activated by being place in a weapon or accessory, perform magic. I suppose you could say another strength of Cid’s is that he is not easily wounded physically, or mentally. He’s taken his share of pain, and emotional pain is rather difficult to come by, when you have an inflated head the size of a massive hot air balloon.

Weaknesses: Being such a proficient fighter has its drawbacks, especially when you’re dealing with someone as volatile and brazen as Cid Highwind. His greatest weakness his definitely his unruliness, for it normally plants in him situations that are difficult for any sentient being. When Cid opens his mouth, it’s like Pandora’s Box, all over again. Thus rivaling his attitude in weaknesses is his ability to shut the hell up.

Notable Possessions: He has the “remarkable” knack of finding reasons to whip his spear/lance out, if the occasion deems worthy. And these “occasions” are more often than not, when it comes to Cid Highwind, Mr.Instigating-Bigot. He’ll also swear up and down that the only thing that keeps him kicking is his cigarettes- as much of a massive contradiction that is.

HISTORY

History: For those who have never been to the tiny village of Rocket Town, its name comes directly from the colossal green rocket that once jutted from a mound right behind the village proper. Despite its once magnificent sheen, SHRINA CORPORATION scrawl along its side, and former aspirations, the rocket is now characterized by the way it leans, awkwardly to the side. Before its devastating collapse, Cid Highwind- or “Captain,” as the townspeople donned him- was a prominent sea-sky pilot of the time. ShinRA Corporation offered him a job, explaining to him that they were beginning a superb Space Program (the first one in existence), and needed someone to man a ship. However, after a few hard years of constructing this rocket, launching day arrived and just as they were about to take off, an alarm sounded from somewhere in the ship. Cid detected it was coming from the oxygen tank storage, and sure enough- Shera, the engineer, was doing a secondary checkup to make sure the tanks were working. To continue the launch on schedule would mean certain death for her, so Cid had to abandon his greatest dream to save her life. Shinra abandoned the campaign when the long-awaited for launch was scrapped, and left the awkward rocket and Cid Highwind with its daunting ghost of a presence. After that day, Cid continued to reluctantly tinker on-land, and from then on all of his frustrations would be directed towards Shera, an altogether insecure and demure woman- and, consequently, now his fiancée.
A few more years passed, and ShinRA came back to Rocket Town. In hopes that they were thinking of starting the space program again, Cid allowed them into his home. Perhaps because he was so fervent into going into space he didn’t notice their newfound interest in his plane, the Tiny Bronco. A rag-tag team of people that called themselves AVALANCHE (including mercenary Cloud Strife) arrived at the same time, and explain to him that they were trying to uproot ShinRA’s decadent standings in society. Apparently, to them, ShinRA was attempting to gather MAKO energy to create materia and infuse it within SOLDIERS, their military, and this was in turn draining the life from the planet. When AVALANCHE also unearthed that Rufus, the president of ShinRA, had only come to steal his prized plane, Cid offered to join with AVALANCHE, and they took off with the Bronco before ShinRA had a change to take what was his.
In the perilous journey to follow, Cid Highwind aided this anti-terrorist group and the somewhat mysterious ex-SOLDIER, Cloud Strife, in discovering and conquering much more than ShinRA. A man named Sephiroth, once a first-class SOLDIER, was slowly but surely draining the lifestream from the planet in ways that Shinra Company could never imagine. From records and Cloud’s blurred but evident connection, they found that Sephiroth was the “experiment” and child of Shinra’s most prominent scientist, Hojo. Hojo had not only infused MAKO into his child’s body, but had injected JENOVA cells into his wife, before she gave birth. These JENOVA cells came from an otherworldly creature, who Sephiroth longs to reunite with. But the only way he can come together with his “Mother” is to destroy the earth itself, and use the life stream to create a universe of his own.
Cid Highwind and the others followed Sephiroth across the entire world of Gaia, until their final showdown occured in the Northern Crater- the fated place where JENOVA had crash landed, so long ago. AVALANCHE, Cloud, Cid, and a few assorted others that joined the cause along the way were able to destroy Sephiroth, who had ascended to godlike heights. But Meteor, a summoning materia that Sephiroth was using to destroy the earth was falling steadily towards the planet. After the exhaustive battle, the team took flight in Cid’s aptly named, “Highwind” airship, somewhat baffled and unable to comprehend what to do about the giant rock only moments away from blinking their planet out of existence.
In the final seconds, Meteor was negated by the life stream itself, which ebbed forth in currents of green light- the world’s own clarion call of resistance. And it worked. However, their world was eternally scarred in the aftermath of Sephiroth and Meteor. Cid Highwind returned to Rocket Town afterwards, albeit alive with new vigor, and has generally kept in touch with the comrades he made during their fateful escapades.
